Shantung Maple trees (acer truncatum) are similar to their Japanese maple cousins, but come with some unique characteristics. They produce yellow flowers in the spring and they have interesting trunks. Their fall foliage is whatrsquo;s most notable, however. The green leaves turn to a golden yellow with reddish hues. Then they deepen into a bright orange and end up as a blazing red. Theyrsquo;re also one of the first to change color in the fall. Shantung maples work well as a small shade tree and they grow in both sun and shade. They also make excellent bonsai specimens.
